  • Explore the validity of primary and secondary sources.
  • Begin to think critically about historical narratives, and interpretation.
  • Analyze and interpret stereotypes of the “Wild West” in pop-culture.
  • Understand how US history has molded the political landscapes of the West.
  • Explore maps and understand the limitations of these and other tools of geography.
  • Understand the three primary classes of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
  • Define and identify distinctions between erosion, mass wasting, and weathering.
  • Define groundwater and explore how water in the west is managed.

All Gay Year participants will complete Raft Guide training, Wilderness First Aid certification, and over 100 hours of community service. In addition, they will complete the equivalent of two college level courses; History of the American West (HIS235), and Physical Geography (GEO11). These courses can be applied to Credit for Prior Learning at their home institution.

Staff Training and Certification

Field Staff are the backbone of Deer Hill Expeditions. Each Field Staff completes a 10 day Guide School where they receive training in trauma informed care, implicit bias, and behavioral risk management. In addition, each staff member holds a current Wilderness First Responder certification. Perhaps most importantly, Deer Hill Field Staff embody the Deer Hill mission and use authentic connection to inspire the youth we serve.
